International Success for York Composer

Thomas Simaku visited Switzerland for the performance of his String Quartet No 2 at the ISCM - World New Music Days Festival, which took place from 3rd to 12th November 2004. The Arditti Quartet, the world's leading ensemble of contemporary music, performed his piece on 10th November, with great success.

Simaku's attendance at this festival was made possible by a grant from British section of the ISCM. This is the sixth time that the international jury have selected his works at this prestigious festival. On 13 November, his 'soliloquy' was performed at the Musikhost International Festival in Denmark by Peter Sheppard Skaerved at a concert featuring the Trilog Ensemble of Munich. "Politiken" of Copenhagen described the work as follows: "In Simaku's 'soliloquy', the expressive and technical potential of the solo violin is brilliantly transformed into an intense dramatic flow, where everything makes sense." This virtuoso piece was premiered at the 2000 ISCM Festival in Luxembourg and has now been performed in several countries across Europe.
