Bill Colleran, Honorary Fellow of Music

The University of York Music Press is pleased to announce that William Colleran has been appointed as an Honorary Fellow of the Department of Music at The University of York. This honour acknowledges Colleran's extraordinary contribution to the life of British music for most of the latter half of the twentieth century.

It is especially appropriate that the Department of Music acknowledge Colleran in this way, for its richness owes much to his commitment to contemporary music and education. Together with York's John Paynter, Colleran established The University of York Music in Action summer school, which brought together some of Britain's leading composers, such as Harrison Birtwistle, Wilfred Mellers, Bernard Rands and Trevor Wishart with dance and drama expert David Henshaw, to develop a course for teachers of music, dance and drama. Having been a director of Universal Edition (where he worked from 1958 to 1994), his encouraging influence is felt throughout the UK and he formed a focus for composers the world over in his central position at Universal Edition's London office. As chair of the board of NMC, his leadership has ensured the wide distribution of much of Britain's most exciting new music. In 1994 Colleran and David Blake established The University of York Music Press, of which he remains a director. His achievements have been widely recognized and UYMP are proud to continue their close association with Colleran, wishing him many congratulations for this new appointment.
