Romances and a Lament were written for Dida Condria as a thank you for her several performances of my music, most notably Labyrinth from Impresa Amorosa in the BBC Young Musician of the Year Keyboard Final 2022 and the Dublin International Piano Competition 2025.
Each piece is prefaced by a text which conveys its mood: the first movement, a lyrical Romance, takes an extract from Wilhelmine Christiane von Chézy's Der Vollmond strahlt (set by Schubert in 1823), the second movement, a world-weary waltz, is inspired by Percy Bysshe Shelleys' To the Moon, and the final piece, a fiery, virtuosic flamenco, is prefaced by a verse from Federico Garcia Lorca's Lament for the Death of Ignacio Sánchez Mejías.
Romances and a Lament is dedicated to Dida with much gratitude and admiration.
