UYMP on BBC Radio 3

Next week, BBC Radio 3 are celebrating Nicola LeFanu in her 70th year on their 'Composer of the Week' programme. As part of the daily broadcast which airs at 12pm and is repeated at 6.30pm, three UYMP composers will have featured works. On Monday 24th April, they play Jeremy Dale RobertsWinter Music taken from the Lontano recording. The show on Tuesday 25th features David Lumsdaine's Blue upon blue with David Pereira on cello. Finally, the penultimate programme on Thursday 27th April, features Sadie Harrison's piece ' ...ballare una passacaglia di ombre...' for solo violin. The track is taken from the Toccata Classics 'Solos and Duos' album featuring Peter Sheppard Skaerved.

Winter Music by Jeremy Dale Roberts was written in 1990 for flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, percussion, and celeste and the premiere was performed by Sounds Positive. Lumsdaine's work Blue upon blue is made of two pieces of music sharing the same space: one a simple modal tune, the other, equally simple gestures of wood and gut. It was composed in 1991 and features on two recordings.

Sadie Harrison's piece, ' ...ballare una passacaglia di ombre...' or ‘dancing a passacaglia of shadows' is one of several movements based on a celebrated mosaic by Sosos of Pergamon depicting an unswept floor. It premiered at Ingram Hall, Nashville, Tennessee, on 19 September 2011 with Peter Sheppard Skaerved on violin.

  • ‘The Scream’ for String Orchestra - Thomas Simaku – World Premiere

Based on Edvard Munch’s iconic painting, Thomas Simaku’s new work, The Scream, will receive its world premiere in Cambridge on 17 November 2017. It will be performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by King’s College Director of Music Stephen Cleobury.

Of this substantial piece lasting 20 minutes, Thomas Simaku writes:

‘The iconic painting by Edvard Munch was the main impulse for writing this piece - hence the title. Its “silent scream” whose echo spans (and can be heard) well beyond the painting's time and frame, struck a chord with me for its resonance with our modern times.

In no way programmatic, the music here focuses on the concentrated form of expression that emanates from the space, the colours, and the gritty intensity of the “deafening silence” in Munch's painting.
