Joanna Wyld of Notes upon Notes has produced a lovely, short film about Luis Tinoco's percussion music, as performed by Drumming Grupo de Percussão on his Odradek CD 'Archipelago'. The film also has brilliant graphics by Andrew Thompson! Watch the film on Facebook at the following link:
Notes upon Notes audio visual exploration of Tinoco's CD/percussion works
9 June 2020Tinoco first collaborated with Drumming Grupo de Percussão in 2003. The ensemble celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2019. Wyld recounts how Tinoco had admired the group and their director Miquel Bernat, tells how he was drawn to their 'imaginative programming, their precision and their vitality' and how working with the ensemble proved to be a 'pivotal experience' for Tinoco, 'allowing him to explore the nuances of the percussion family in collaboration with one of the finest contemporary percussion ensembles in the world.' Tinoco was inspired by Drumming Grupo de Percussão to compose a wealth of percussion works, including many of the pieces selected for the Odradek records album 'Archipelago' - which title comes from one of the pieces for the album and is described by Tinoco as 'musical islands of sound'. Wyld states: 'The contrast between tuned, untuned and parttially tuned percussion is one that Tinoco explores in forensic detail in these works'. Wyld goes on to introduce us to various works on the album and to give us some wonderful listening examples, which are accompanied by the magnificent graphics! The Notes upon Notes short film was produced at Bromley Youth and Music Trust.
