Venables' "4:48 Psychosis" wins UK Theatre Award for opera

UYMP congratulates Philip Venables as news reaches us of not one, but two recent accolades- a UK Theatre Award and a selection for the PRSF New Music Biennial.

After rave reviews for his new opera, ‘4:48 Psychosis’ back in May, Philip has just received the UK Theatre award for achievement in opera. The Guardian wrote that “Venables has done wonderful things” with Sarah Kane’s final play while the Telegraph described it as “rawly powerful and laceratingly honest.” Evidently, industry experts were in agreement with critics and bestowed the award on The Royal Opera and Guildhall School Of Music production at the Lyric Hammersmith. The award ceremony took place at the London’s Guildhall on the 9th October.

Venables’ work with David Hoyle, ‘Illusions’, has also been listed as one of the 10 nominations of existing works selected for the PRS for Music Foundation’s New Music Biennial 2017. The work, commissioned by the London Sinfonietta, will receive public performances around the UK throughout 2017 along with the other nominated commissions.
