BBC Radio 3 Review: James Weeks-'Signs of Occupation'

On Saturday night, BBC Radio 3's 'Hear and Now' programme reviewed James Weeks' new album, 'Signs of Occupation.' Discussing various new releases were Sara Mohr-Pietsch and Kerry Andrew.

They played Weeks' piece, 'Digger' (for speaking guitarist), and briefly discussed the work whilst commenting on the album as a whole. Mohr-Pietsch and Andrew discuss how the album has an 'overriding theme of occupation of the land and landscape that feels quite prescient'. They describe 'Digger' as ‘very sparse, doggedly using the same determinedly microtonal motifs.’ They say this is a theme across many of the tracks on the album.

In general, they ‘really enjoyed the CD’ and described Weeks’ work as ‘very evocative music, performative as well.’

‘Digger’ is played at around 6 minutes into the programme with discussion afterwards.
