Anthony Gilbert's 70th Birthday Retrospective
1 July 2004The first half of the programme included pieces written for the occasion by composers such as Nicola LeFanu, Alexander Goehr, Janice Misurell-Mitchell, Martin Butler and Harrison Birtwistle. The second part comprised seven of Gilbert's pieces which spanned his career from the early sixties, Elegy [1961, piano solo] to the present, Tinos [2004, soprano, clarinet and vibraphone]. The performance of Tinos was a world premiere by the ensemble Endimion. John Fallas wrote of the composer and the event: 'Gilbert is finally a curiously approachable enigma... this utterly charming little recorder piece [Igórochki] ended the evening on an absolute high.'
