2006 Centenary of Elisabeth Lutyens' Birth
1 March 2004
UYMP welcomes the inclusion of Lutyens' music in upcoming programmes, and anyone planning to perform her work as part of a centenary celebration of her life in 2006, is encouraged to contact UYMP to make timely arrangements.
"Lutyens comes from a generation of British composers who have all travelled along very different paths. Her attitude towards composition has always been genuinely international and this is born out by the fact that, in terms of musical language, she is the most radical composer of her generation in Britain. One of the most notable features of Lutyens' work is its ability to be intense and passionate with the maximum economy and this stems from her thoroughly professional approach towards composing. Finally, what strikes one about Elisabeth Lutyens' work taken as a whole is its complete integrity; if a composer is as unswerving as Lutyens has been from what she senses is the true path onwards, then the work too must have the same quality, and in this age of uncertain values that is something that everyone should be grateful for and admire" writes former student of Lutyens, Robert Saxton in 1978.
