This is an offshoot of a rather larger 50th-birthday greeting I’m hoping to write for Simon Holt, responding to Echo, a magical installation at St Mary’s, York by visual artist Susie MacMurray.  The free-flowing melodic lines are shaped by an elegant bell-ringing method known as 'York Surprise' – the surprise here being the discovery in final draft that the method had produced, within the piece’s 50-second duration, 50 pitch-intervals of a second and 50 of a third.
