Rock Music

Nigel Osborne has been working with Musicians from Uganda and the London Sinfonietta following a visit to Uganda where they sampled some ancient "rock gongs".

For those who read the Guardian this might be old news. For everyone else the Guardian published a series of articles about Nigel Osborne's project with the London Sinfonietta, for which he collaborated with David Purser (trombone), Melinda Maxwell (oboe), and Tim Palmer (percussion), all of whom travelled to Uganda to work with artists on a project on an island in Lake Victoria. You can read all about it here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/oct/01/worldmusic.uganda

Osborne also took part in a panel discussing whether 'music can be a force for good'. To read about this and listen to some of the discussion, click here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/katine/2008/oct/13/music-and-development

For another interview with Osborne about music's 'ability to heal', go here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/katine/audio/2008/oct/13/musicandart-news3

On 15 October the project working with Ugandan musicians culminated in a concert, the review of which can be found here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/oct/15/classicalmusicandopera

Tom Service also discussed the project on his blog: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/tomserviceblog/2008/oct/15/sinfonietta-rock-music-uganda
