Bernard Rands concert and seminar in Sheffield

George Nicholson, Reader in Composition at the University of Sheffield's Music Department, is hosting a visit to Sheffield by Sheffield-born composer Bernard Rands, in honour of Rands' 80th birthday.
The visit starts with a research seminar on his music on the morning of Wednesday 5th November (10am) at the Department of Music, and culminates in an evening concert in Firth Hall on Sunday 9th November at 7.45pm with the Sheffield University New Music Ensemble. A pre-concert talk/conversation will be given by George Nicholson and Bernard Rands, at 6.30pm. The programme will feature Rands' Concertino for oboe and ensemble, and deja for 6 instruments and a selection of Rand's Preludes for piano will be performed by Nicholson. The programme will also include Nicholson's work Catch for flute, clarinet and vibraphone. Vocal works by two of Rand's teachers - Berio's O King and Dallapiccola's Due liriche di Anacreonte - will be sung by Jane Ginsborg (soprano). Bernard Rands, who studied with Boulez, Maderna, Berio and Dallapicoola, emigrated to the USA in 1975. He became an American citizen in 1983 and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1984. He received an honorary DMus from the University of Sheffield in 1996.
