Luís Tinoco

Biography
Luís Tinoco, who was born in Lisbon in 1969, began his composition studies at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa under António Pinho Vargas and Christopher Bochmann. He was awarded scholarships by the Centro Nacional de Cultura and by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to complete a MMus in Composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied with Paul Patterson. He presently lectures in Composition and Analysis at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa.
He wrote and presented the contemporary music programme A Century's Score for RadioDifusao Portuguesa from 2000 to 2003, and is now the author of a new program for the same broadcaster, The Sounds' Geography. He is also a founder member of and Artistic Director for the contemporary music ensemble OrchestrUtopica.
Tinoco's music has been performed throughout the world by ensembles and soloists including the Arditti String Quartet, The Wallace Collection, le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, the Apollo Saxophone Quartet, the Galliard Ensemble, the Drumming Percussion Group, Ensemble Remix, the Oporto National Orchestra, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Lontano, the Lisbon Contemporary Music Group, the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. As well as winning numerous awards and competitions, including the Galliard Ensemble Composition Competition, the Lopes-Graça Composition Prize and the Ribeiro da Fonte Prize, his work has featured in many festivals, including the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the Spitalfields Festival, Festival Settembre Musica in Torino, ISCM Festival World Music Days, the Adelaide International Arts Festival and the New Zealand International Festival for the Arts.
